How to avoid being mugged/robbed?
I go to school in Riverside, California, which is not the nicest neighborhood. I dormed for the first year, but I will be living in an off-campus apartment now, with a short distance to the school. I'm always getting crime reports from the local police department about students being held at gunpoint and robbed, and I'm starting to fear for myself and want to know ways to avoid it. I'm gonna be commuting on a bicycle to and from classes, so will that help? What are the chances that muggers target someone who's riding a bike at a moderate to fast speed? Should I keep pepper spray on me? Fake wallet? What are measures I can take to avoid being targeted, and what can I do in the event that it happens? If it helps any, I'm around 6'1" and am pretty big. Any advice helps, thanks.

First off, reading the police reports makes you both more aware and more paranoid, so you are a step ahead...and frightening yourself. Be aware, use your eyes, bike (and walk) with confidence. The odds of you (a male) getting rolled is unlikely in the first place, and less so since you are big and tall. Lastly, have you checked the reported incidents are against a map? Like anything, location matters: and Riverside is a big place. Look for clusters and avoid those areas.

Bike helps a lot. There's still a chance you'll get robbed, but it really does help. Best thing you can is figure out the safest route (even if its longer) and go by that way. At least you'll get more exercise. As for finding out the safest route, you'll have to figure that out on your own. The usual rule is the busier the area, the safer, although that doesn't always apply.
Also, make sure not to wear any expensive clothing brands or clearly display expensive equipment (especially laptops). If you look rich, they'll think your rich.
Cheers and stay safe

I've heard that confidence is a big deterrent. A friend of mine (this is kind of weird) used to walk to school holding a pen like a knife and it made her feel safer for some reason... on a bike they probably wouldnt risk you running over them.
