What will replace desktops?

I've read that desktops will become obsolete. What will we use instead? I have a device that allows me to listen to music and watch some videos while I'm riding the bus. At home I have my desktop, which has a 27" screen. This desktop is my file cabinet, my photo album, my TV, my radio, my stereo. I store recipes and documents on my desktop. I have a terabyte on my hard drive. I also back up on DVDs as well as a back up service. I watch movies online as well as play DVDS. What will I be using when desktops are no longer used. I like having a 27" screen. I don't want to watch a movie on a 7" screen.

I don't see them ever totally going away just becoming more efficient.

You mentioned in your question these uses of your desktop:

    1- my file cabinet,

    2- my photo album,

    3 - I store recipes and documents

4- I have a terabyte on my hard drive

All that is pure data, which you can store on a cloud service or on an external hard-drive.

Hopefully in the future there will be services for storing huge amount of data and organizing in a fast and convenient manner. Even today, you don't really need a desktop for storage.

    Then you mentioned:

5- my TV, my radio, my stereo.

6- I watch movies online as well as play DVDS.

All these are online streaming services, for which you don't need a desktop. You can use an iPad for your bus rides or while at home - use a smart TV which connects to the internet, with a 40" screen :) such TV/iPad can also connect to your storage device and present your photos, recipes, or any other document.

Thus, I believe that for you - a desktop is already obsolete...

I doubt that over the next 10-30 years desktops will simply go away, they will become more and more energy efficient , smaller but powerful , but if they should become obsolete there always tablets on the market

I don't think desktops will ever become obsolete if i'm honest, not for a while anyway. currently they are still widely used for offices and educational institutions.

and gamers will almost ALWAYS prefer to use a desktop.

They will most likely be replaced invisble phones that have what desktop has. Welcome to the future
