To put it simply speakers are responsible for the sound as you know it, subwoofer is what makes that vibration effect you feel when you listen to loud music.

There are three different types of speakers: tweeter, standard speaker, and subwoofers. They differ in the frequency of sound they emit. Tweeters play high frequencies ( high pitch sounds | treble ). Stantard speakers play mid range frequencies ( normal sounds ). Subwoofers play low frequencies ( low tones | bass).

For crystal clear sound clarity you need a mixture of all 3 of these speakers.

Speakers, usually play 80hz and up, like vocals and most of your music, and for the most part, won't require an amplifier to drive them. They are anywhere from 6" X 9" ovals, down to 3 1/2". anything smaller then that is a tweeter, usually 1"

A subwoofer usually plays the 80hz and down, lower bass frequencies, Will require an amplifier, and is anywhere from 8" to 18".

As with most things, there are always exceptions. You can go to www.crutchfield.com and read articles about the more specific applications, also find out what will fit your car exactly.

    Good Luck!

Aero d is the most correct answer. With that being said, to truly answer your question, for crystal clear sound and good beats, you need both. You need midrange speakers and tweeters for clear crisp sound, and you need subs to fill out the low frequencies. And you need amplification for both. Most people add a sub an amp, and then wonder why their system sounds worse, but just with more bass. Thats because the subs overpower the already strained power output of the head unit, and when you try to turn it up to hear the music, you get distortion. For a good balance, the rule of thumb is to have a 2:1 ratio of power for your system. Example.... 200 total watts for mids and highs, 400 total watts for sub (s)

Speakers produce audio output that can be heard by listeners; they are transducers that convert electromagnetic waves into sound waves. Subwoofers are loudspeakers - responsive only to the lowest acoustic frequencies.

You need speakers to hear any audio system and subwoofers just make audio systems sound MUCH better!
