Today's police are raised on training videos like "Cop vs. Vietnam Vet" starting from their earliest days at the academy. They're conditioned by continued exposure to fearful anecdotes to "shoot first and ask questions later". Modern cops want the security level of a babysitting job but the prestige of a badge. Police work is no longer a "calling" and subsequently the police forces are just a bunch of semi-retarded and personality disordered fools scaring themselves to death every time they make a traffic stop. I think the bullet proof vest is the worst thing to ever happen to local level police forces. Now every time they put on that vest they're reminded of their own vulnerability and start to feel threatened by everything.

I find it both heartening and frightening that our nation appears to be turning against it's own police forces. We're inclined to see the police as a threat rather than protectors now that they're just "law enforcers" (and not public servants and protectors of the Constitution).

*edit* in the article you link to he did open fire on the police and resisted gas. How would you have handled it? Stake out the property and/or starve him out? Leave the scene of the crime and cross your fingers in hopes he won't harm anyone?
