Non-sarcastic question for Tri Fans: what happened since the 2011 gold cup?
I really haven't been watching Mexico play since then except when they played us. They were so on fire in the match I thought it would be years (I mean like until 2016) before we ever beat them again. What happened to the coach you had back then and what happened to the team period??

Combination of factors.
1. Much of the players that formed the base of the 2011 Gold Cup winning team were at the peak of their prime and now they are past their prime. Rafael Marquez is no longer at the Barcelona peak of his career and that was evident when he went to the Red Bulls that year. Carlos Salcido was at Fulham that year and has since returned to the Liga MX and lost his European form and his age is showing. Maza Rodriguez was in peak form at PSV Eindhoven that year, but since last year when he left Stuttgart and returned to Liga MX, his form has dropped drastically and he is not the player he used to be. Pablo Barrera was a key play-maker at right-wing, but injuries have left him with a loss of form. Efrain Juarez lost his confidence after failing in Europe and has since left a void at right back that Mexico has not been able to fill
2. Chepo used to use a lone forward early in his start with Mexico. This provided success as Mexico hit all cylinders with an attacking midfield that wreaked havoc. However, after one loss to the U.S. in El Azteca, Chepo decided to change his style with two forwards and a counter-attack approach. Chepor could never master this strategy and his player selection for key positions were questionable at best.
3. He would not use the best players at key positions, but unstead used players of confidence. For example, Torrado is trusted by Chepo, but it is clear he is a shell of his past. Still, Chepo played him instead of playing Hector Herrera who is a budding star from the olympic team and is now in FC Porto. Chepo also initially played an out of form Maza Rodriguez instead of a budding star who is now with FC Porto called Diego Reyes. Chepo would not give a starting spot to goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, whom many in France believe that he is the best keeper in their league and is on the rise in Europe. Instead he gave the staring position to Jesus Corona, another player of trust, but not the best player at his position.
4. Stubborn and arrogance in her personal traits also spelled his downfall. He refused to acknowledge mistakes and refused to change anything about his approach. It also cost him in terms of being able to call up one of the CONCACAF's best players in Carlos Vela. Vela declined every call-up due to Chepo's arrogance and stubborn approach.
5. Eventually, he lost the player's trust due to the above reasons and it showed on Friday night after the devastating loss to Honduras.
