I need help adding negative fraction and positives?

for example -2 2/5 + 6 1/2

The 6 and the 1 are whole numbers

Update:

Also sometimes the numbers are the same but the negative symbol is switch to the other one e.g

-2 2/5 + 6 1/2 would be like this 2 2/5 + -6 1/2 does that mean anything different

so change -2 2/5 and 6 1/2 into improper fractions: -2 2/5 as an improper fraction is -8/5 and 6 1/2 as an improper fraction is 9/2.

    so now you have -8/5+9/2.

    now find a common denominator.

the common denominator is 10 so multiply both of them by a number that should make the denominator 10. you would multiply -8/5 by 2 and 9/2 by 5 so that both their denominators are 10. from there you should end up with: -16/10+45/10. then add that, which comes out to be 29/10 and you can change that to a mixed number if you want, which will be 2 9/10.

There are two ways to do this, so I'll show you both

    1)Do the whole numbers first. -2 + 6 = 4

Now do the fractions. First you have to get them with the same denominator, and the lowest common denominator is 10

    -2/5 + 1/2

    = -4/10 + 5/10

    = 1/10

    now put it back together

    4 1/10

    2) Turn them into improper fractions

    -2 2/5 + 6 1/2

    -12/5 + 13/2

    -24/10 + 65/10

    41/10

    4 1/10
