Go in the control panel and click on Scanners and Camera and see if you see the Canon scanner icon there. I you installed the software correctly, you should see the icon there. Click it and it will activate the scanner and you can use it from the menu you are presented with.

I know you do not use any ink when you try to scan, but all printer options need to be functional to make the printer complete and fully operational for use. So you will need a sufficient amount of ink in
all cartridges in order to scan. A replacement ink cartridge may be necessary.

I'm trying to scan documents on my Epson XP425, when I select option scan to PDF or Computer, it gives me the option select a computer, USB connection or Last used. when I select either of them I get the message. Communication Error, Connect Computer. It is already connected via the USB cable??
I upgraded to windows 10 last year now it appears to be not working.

- your printer is hosed (unlikely, but possible)
- windows filesystem is hosed due to growing bad disk blocks (quite possible, after 1-2 years system becomes corrupted and unusable, standard thing with hard disks.
- printer firmware needs upgrading - contact support ti find out how.
- printer is not compatible with XP? doubtful
to solve bad disk blocks problem, run spinrite. spinrite you must put sata controller into IDE mode in order to boot. also, 6.1 which has sata support will be a free upgrade. $89 and you will probably get your data back. mode 2 (default).
