Why isn't proper pronounced Pro-Per instead?

(or, it should be spelled propper instead)

Am I missing something?

    Why is "English" pronounced "Inglish"? Why does "should" have an L? Why doesn't "instead" rhyme with "bead"?

    You're missing something. It's the same reason you're not pronounced 'pissy-chuh lay-pissy'.
