Dog on Prozac--side effects?

My dog is on prozac for severe separation anxiety and I've noticed some changes in him:

-loss of appetite/loss of interest in food (before he was VERY food motivated)

-aggression and biting (very out of his character)

-random peeing when I call for him-- he IS potty trained and now all of a sudden there are time when we call for him and he cowers and pees (don't know his history before 5 months of age, but he was not abused that we know of)

Could some of this be caused by the Prozac, as some websites have stated?

We are currently tapering him off of it, but has anyone else had these or other side effects while giving their dog prozac?

    Prozac Side Effects In Dogs

How very sad that somebody has persuaded you to resort to using this for 'separation anxiety' when fact is, in the vast majority of cases like this, a little adjustment in your life-style should be far more effective in stopping him missing you. I'd suggest yes, what you are seeing could well be down to this medication - try taking him off and see if he's better, in this regard.

If the dog hasn't been with you from a young puppy, your clue about his anxiety, being clingy, will probably lie in what went on before you had him.

I'd try to have somebody be in with him at intervals during the day if he's unhappy being left, or get him into a day creche. The last thing I'd be doing is using Prozac for so-called separation anxiety.

OMG a dog on Prozac for anxiety this couldn't happen in the UK well hopefully it won't catch on.

Potty trained LOL like a baby I think you mean house trained you are dealing with a dog not a toddler.

Now let's look at the issues he cowers and pees sorry they are not side effects so who has traumatised this dog or made it a nervous wreck, the poor thing probably doesn't know what's going on.

Now let's go back in time we are in the wild and there strolls your dog does he visit the Pharmacy and asks the Bullpit behind the counter 'I'm very stressed out can I have some Prozac please' can you see what I'm trying to say to you Prozac is for humans not for dogs, take the dog out more talk to him as you walk him and stop hovering around him as if you are some sort of warden.

It's a dog allow him to be one and find out who made him cower and pee because it's not prozac unless you are over dosing him.

The prozac will mask the anxiety but not cure it. So the biting could be fear biting, he feels ok until he is suddenly pushed past his ability to cope and bites. And the fear peeing would back that up.

Drugs alone cannot cure seperation anxiety. You need a training program. Ideally you would work with a canine behaviour consultant, you vet may be able to refer you to one, and you would need to work on his general levels of anxiety as well as his fear of being left.
