1872 - Charles Taze Russell founded the International Bible Students Association

1916 - Charles Taze Russell dies

1917 - Joseph Franklin Rutherford appointed as the second president

1918 – Division between Australian Bible Student movement and Jehovah’s Witnesses

    1925 – Worldwide Memorial attendance approximately 90,000

    1928 – Worldwide Memorial attendance approximately 20,000

1930 – 75% of original Bible Students left the Society

1931 – New name ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses’ adopted at Columbus, Ohio convention

Bottom line is that it was Rutherford who introduced the name 'Jehovah's Witnesses' and by 1930 three quarters of the original Bible Students voted with their feet and left because they disagreed with Rutherford's ambitions to establish a printing empire using voluntary labour.

Since the death of Russell, he has been discredited by suceeding presidents until there is virtually no reference made of him whatsoever. Why, the current Governing Body are now claiming that Russell was never the 'Faithful and Discrete Slave' because they now say Jesus did not appoint the FDS till 1919 - after Russell had died.

Russell was so wrong about so many things to do with when Armageddon would start and finish, the Society wants nothing to do with him. Why, you can't even find any of his publications on their official web site! No doubt that is to avoid questions being asked about all their false predictions. LM

General Patton doesn't have the whole story correct, though I do notice that in his own way he tries to listen. :) Problem is, there are way too many LIES out there.

The said "pyramid" was just part of the cemetery. Russell was not "buried under it" and wherever they put him, was not Russell's wishes before he died. And does that really matter anyway?

Yes, he did have some misunderstanding about things. He never claimed he was perfect! And if he would have made this claim, and others, many of us would not be Jehovah's Witnesses. What we do see is that he was "Searching" for answers at a time that no one had them biblically And we see this man was striving to find "Truth" in scripture. He devoted his entire life and life savings to do so. This endeavor was NOT on his own, and he was NOT claiming to be a prophet, as some think so. What he did do is pray for holy spirit to guide him and reveal these truths from scripture.

This is the way Jehovah's Christian Witnesses do as well. So, if the information (and ALL of it) is TRUE, we have no problem discussing Charles Taze Russell.

Way way too much time is being spent on the brothers and fathers of the past who tried to honor god and Jesus Christ!! Over the years Jehovah's wittiness have lost a lot if credibility because they spoke things and said things their leaders told them to say! Well this is 2014 Jehovah's wittiness!

If you are of Jehovah and not just using his name to sound good and make the right noises then concentrate on preaching the bible from the bible! Send back all that paper and tell those people we want bibles and men who will go to the door reading only the gospel and teaching only the exact words of jesus! Then they will know you are from Jehovah and your quite dubious mistakes of the past will be forgiven and forgotten.

We actually made a docu-drama about our history and dramatized a part of the life of Charles Taze Russell, I think he was an excellent man and can honestly say, I'm happy to talk about him; did you realize he started publishing the Watchtower when he was still in his twenties?!

Hand on heart, I have no problem when he is mentioned although I do take exception to the groundless slander that anti-witnesses spread about to poison the minds of the gullible that don't verify their facts. I hate lies, I hate slander and I've done enough research to permit myself the luxery of not listening to either.

I'll link you to the film I'm talking about. (you can skip the intro if you like and start at 11:37)

I will just point out that CTR is not our "founder" the foundation of our religion it JESUS CHRIST. Russell was an early bible student and first president of the WBTS.

Your question is a false premise but Brother Russell was trying to swim upstream towards Bible Truth

rather than float with False Religion.

    ===========================

    THE YEAR 1914

A crucial time was drawing close. In 1876 the Bible student Charles Taze Russell contributed the article “Gentile Times: When Do They End?” to the Bible Examiner, published in Brooklyn, New York, which said on page 27 of its October issue, “The seven times will end in A.D. 1914.” p. 7The Gentile Times is the period referred to in another Bible translation as “the appointed times of the nations.” (Luke 21:24) Not all that was expected to happen in 1914 did happen, but it did mark the end of the Gentile Times and was a year of special significance. Many historians and commentators agree that 1914 was a turning point in human history. The following quotations illustrate this:

“The last completely ‘normal’ year in history was 1913, the year before World War I began.”—Editorial in the Times-Herald, Washington, D.C., March 13, 1949.

“Increasingly, the 75-year period from 1914 to 1989, covering two world wars and the cold war, is being seen by historians as a single, discrete epoch, a time apart in which much of the world was fighting war, recovering from war or preparing for war.”—The New York Times, May 7, 1995.

“The whole world really blew up about World War I and we still don’t know why. Before then, men thought that utopia was in sight. There was peace and prosperity. Then everything blew up. We’ve been in a state of suspended animation ever since . . . More people have been killed in this century than in all of history.”—Dr. Walker Percy, American Medical News, November 21, 1977.

More than 50 years after 1914, German statesman Konrad Adenauer wrote: “Security and quiet have disappeared from the lives of men since 1914.”—The West Parker, Cleveland, Ohio, January 20, 1966.

The Society’s first president, C. T. Russell, died in 1916 and was succeeded the following year by Joseph F. Rutherford. Many changes took place. A companion magazine to The Watchtower, called The Golden Age, was introduced. (Now called Awake!, with a circulation of more than 20,000,000 in over 80 languages.) Door-to-door witnessing received greater emphasis. To distinguish themselves from the denominations of Christendom, in 1931 these Christians embraced the name Jehovah’s Witnesses. This name is based on Isaiah 43:10-12.

The radio was used extensively in the 1920’s and 1930’s. By 1933 the Society was using 403 radio stations to broadcast Bible lectures. Later, the use of the radio was largely replaced by increased house-to-house visits by Witnesses with portable phonographs and recorded Bible talks. Home Bible studies were started with anyone who showed interest in Bible truth.

it's interesting you say that, because I never really knew much about ct russel. In fact I really don't care about that, what i care about is the bible itself, and anyone who thinks they are smart about the past need to relish this piece of history and ask yourself, could it be that no one was very smart back then....or even now...4. Pain of Surgery Without Anesthesia. Hospitalized newborns, from preemies to babies up to 18 months of age, have been routinely operated upon without benefit of pain-killing anesthesia. This has been the practice for decades but was unknown to the general public until 1985 when some parents discovered that their seriously ill premature babies had suffered major surgery without benefit of anesthesia. [67,68,69,70,71,72] Up to this time, babies were typically given a form of curare to paralyze their muscles for surgery, making it impossible for them to lift a finger or make a sound of protest! .......So you wanna explain what ? About who?? Do your homework, only God can recommend himself on this or any subject- so unless you are an obnoxious know it all, you too could benefit from god's wisdom, found only in the bible....

Source(s): Exodus 21:'22 “And in case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children+ do come out* but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him without fail according to what the owner of the woman may lay upon him; and he must give it through the justices.+ 23 But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul* for soul,+ 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,+ 25 branding for branding, wound for wound, blow for blow."

Mentioning CT Russell is one thing. Doing so with the sole intent to defame is another thing entirely.

You ask for specifics when your question has not been couched in a way that demands specifics, [please correct me if I'm wrong] but rather an affirmation of why we "don't like it when [you] mention [our] founder Charles Taze Russell," or not. All I can do is refer you to my answers at:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Auh1o...

    and

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am.nV...

which, hopefully, will answer your question. As I said at the outset of my answer, "Mentioning CT Russell is one thing. Doing so with the sole intent to defame is another thing entirely."

If I made false accusations against someone for whom you had deep admiration, would you "like it"? Someone like CT Russell, who as I said in one of those answers, "devoted much of his life to understanding Bible truths and sharing that with as many as he possibly could, even at the expense of his health; who never once allowed a collection plate to be passed, and who certainly showed by his passion for truth that he didn't deserve many of the false claims made against him," then, how would you feel?

I would be most interested to hear your response.

    ===============

Edit: @ Consider This: I have read through all the answers from JWs here, and nowhere can I find what you assert, i.e. "A jw infers that their organization had NO FOUNDER!" SUNSHINE pointed out that CT Russell was not our founder, that Jesus himself was. You inanely add, "So I guess the very few foundations that Russell did accomplish means nothing," when my answer and others refute that remark.

Given what was actually said by JWs here, may I suggest to you that your question, "Can you believe the level of cognitive malfunction required to even make such a supposition?" should be more appropriately addressed to the person who made those false assertions in your answer?

If you haven't worked out who that is, look in the mirror.

And, btw, I don't think Jesus Christ would be very impressed with you calling him our "stinking founder," do you?

We don't consider him as our founder. He was our brother, just like the apostles and other worshipers of Jehovah. He was given a role by Jesus Christ and Jehovah to serve a purpose that was needed in his time frame. Just like all of us serve a purpose today that is greatly needed at this time we are in. The governing body serves a purpose in God's theocratic arrangement on earth, Jesus serves a purpose in God's heavenly organization, the elders serve a purpose in God's earthly arrangement etc.,

No one found anyone, but only Jehovah himself. Who continually guides and directs us humans to fulfill his purposes and will for the sake of his name.

The Jehovah witness movement (i.e. the publishing corporation) has move beyond Russell, for his ideas are no longer marketable.

Most witnesses don't think of their publishing company as a very profitable lucrative business. But that's exactly what it is. Russell's ideas no longer sell anything, so he has be dropped like an old shoe.

When you're running a business like the WTBTS it's important to keep the "publishers" in a positive morale by keeping fresh ideas coming out in the magazine. Witnesses call this "new light."

C.T. Russell's day has come and gone. The followers of the movement have fond memories of him, (according to what the society wants them to remember) but try to forget he was buried under an Egyptian pyramid.

The word: "Marketable," is key when understanding why JW's don't like spending time talking about Russell, when they knock on your door.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zebra@ Thanks for the compliment: " I do notice that in his own way he tries to listen. :)" So I did some more research based on you post.

I stand corrected, Russell wasn't buried under a pyramid..The "Rutherford’s Pyramid Monument" was erected at the Rosemont cemetery by Rutherford after he took over the movement. The pyramid rests on the plot owned by the WTBTS in which Russell's grave is nearby. Interesting to note that C.R. tombstone had two versions: The original, and the one that's there now, with the words: “The Laodicean Messenger”. The following pro-WT link has both pictures.

    http://ctr.rlbible.com/?p=1212

Concerning the "pyramid monument," an asker in the article said the following, and received this answer:

This pyramid monument is not Russell’s gravestone, tombstone.

    One asked:

You showed two pictures of grave markers. If you acknowledge that it has changed, have you looked to see if any other grave markers were used prior to the one presently there? How often do people update tombstones?

We have found no evidence of any change of Russell's gravestone except for the one time. It would mean nothing to us, however, if the WTS leaders had decided to change tombstone again.

    It was asked:

Also, you provided a picture produced by the Bible Students Convention Report of 1919. Was he the only one buried in the gravesite?

If by “gravesite”, you mean the plots owned by the Watch Tower Society in the Rosemont Cemetery, yes, there are other Bible Students who were buried in the WTS plots that surround the pyramid monument.

The question was given to us:

Plus, you don’t agree with the new tombstone. Why would the WTBTS (if they are the ones who authorized it) put that on his tombstone if that’s not a) who he claimed to be, or b) who they believed him to be?

Rutherford was using his claims for Russell to bolster support for his own claims to power and his new organization. (By 1928, the greater majority (more than 75%) of the Bible Student movement had rejected Rutherford’s new organization and his gospel connected to that organization.) Rutherford made many false claims concerning Russell. Rutherford also claimed Russell was a prophet, when we KNOW Russell never claimed such an idea, and he totally disclaimed being a prophet. Anyone who has actually studied Russell’s works know that he never claimed to be the Laodicean Messenger, even if Rutherford promoted him as being the Laodicean Messenger. Thus, in answer to a), yes Rutherford claimed Russell was the Laodicean Messenger even though Russell never made such a claim; and to b) yes, Rutherford did indeed promoted the idea that Russell was the Laodicean Messenger, at least until about 1928.

    Another Question:

Now, you also point out the pyramid that Rutherford built. Isn't it true that this wasn't just to honor those who died, but to honor the Great Pyramid that Russell used to calculate the end of the gentile times?

Yes, the pyramid monument is indeed meant to be a miniature replica of God’s Stone Witness in Egypt. (Isaiah 19:19) However, to say that Russell used the Great Pyramid to calculate the end of the Gentile Times is misleading. N. H. Barbour calculated the end of the Gentitle Times based on Bible prophecy; the measurements of God’s Stone Witness simply confirm, or corroborate, the date 1914.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which brings up some other questions: The altar mentioned in Isaiah 19:19 is future; The Great Pyramid http://www.aeraweb.org/projects/how-old-are-the-py... built long before Isaiah's time; and did the times of the Gentiles really end in 1914?

    Your thoughts?

I don't agree at all. It's those who are not of our faith who commit character assassination against him. Things that he did back 100 years ago were what was thought to be acceptable all these years things have changed for our organization and these thing Apostate like to bring up.

Vot is yet to meet a Witness who doesn't like it when Br. Russell is mentioned- why would anyone not like to be reminded of one of our spiritual ancestors, who by his self-sacrificing spirit and zeal contributed much to the history of Jehovah's modern-day organisation?

Of course, if you mention him in a rude or slanderous way, we'd not be interested in listening to you.

How would you feel if someone peddled lies about your beloved great-grandfather?
