How can I get my Great Pyrenese to stop biting strangers?

He is two years old, neutered, and we live on a farm, where his primary job is killing coyotes- which is very necessary. I don't think he had much human interaction as a puppy- he seemed timid of us when we first bought him, (while our other Pyr we have known since birth and is very sweet to everyone.)

He barks at a distance, seems to calm when they get closer, then nips them in the behind the moment their back is turned.

This only happens in his "territory" (and only to visitors- he has never shown the slightest aggression to the household). He is totally sweet and docile when I take him into town.

How do I get this to stop?

I would suggest you work with a trainer with this one, with him on the lead and working under direction from you when meeting strangers. Teach him an appropriate greeting ritual. Start with him off territory where he is more laid back, then move to home territory when he has the hang of it.

It could take months, and you may have to muzzle him in the meantime when he is loose - which isn't much good for a flock dog.

And you will probably have to repeat this for the rest of his life. This breed are known for needing good early socialisation, otherwise they end up wary of strangers.

The answer is simple you install a fence and reinfoirced wire is great with the spikes on the top and the bottom, you push the spikes into the ground and the panels are stapled together, your dog will not jump a 6 foot high spiked fence and plants will soon cover the fencing. Your dog is a good guard dog my GSD barks at strangers but he's retained behind the fencing whch I put up in a day with my son, it's all of one acre.

You are either going to need to teach him a solid down stay so that he remains in place rather than interacting with visitors on his turf, or you are going to need to hold onto him while you have visitors. If you have a lot of very tolerant friends you might be able to train him not to nip by letting him interact with visitors in a controlled fashion, but considering the damage a pyr can do with a bite, you definitely want to keep him from biting people on his terms.

Its a LSG dog, they are unfriendly towards strangers. You'd know this if you had done your research. Stop letting strangers come onto the land and its your fault for not making sure the dog is porpely confined when people come over so you can be sued over it

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

Put the dog up & away when visitors come over or keep him on leash & under your control.

He needs more interaction with humans. Take him to dog parks with muzzle and instant he starts to growl discipline him. Dogs are pack animals and need to respect the people you bring into the pack.
