I would like to know where in the world my parents can go for r& r other than cruise ships. They have been?

I would like to know where in the world my parents can go for R& R other than cruise ships. They have been there, done that. They have been on numerous cruises, and it is a bit too much for them now. My father has Parkinson's disease and has to use a walker now to get around. They enjoy cruises, but having to traverse the ship in order to go to the various functions, as well as eat, is just too much for them. I myself have not been anywhere, outside of the US, so the only place that I can think of for an example, would be a place like Lake Louise in Canada, Somewhere that is very beautiful to look out of their bedroom window, and if they feel up to it, go to a restaurant nearby, or within the hotel, with the option of ordering top notch food. They have plenty of money, so I am talking five stars here. They live in NYC in a small apartment, and spend allot of time in it and sometimes just need to escape somewhere where they can just relax and not think about anything at all, except for ordering their food. I know there are travel agents and such, but sometimes they can have their own agendas, and recommend places that they have never seen, or been.

Perhaps there are vacations specifically for the disabled, where allot of help is available, and getting around is very easy. This means allot to me to be able to present them with some alternatives to the average places where there are tourists everywhere, and allot of noise.

Any and all suggestions would be wonderful.

Have they gone to any of the all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean islands? They are lovely, and have great facilities. For help, it might be worthwhile for them to take a well-liked caregiver for assistance --cover the person's travel expenses, hotel room, and pay a salary. If they would take a couple rather than one person, and give them off a couple of evenings and a couple of afternoons, that would be great.

Or, if they enjoy the Gulf Coast, Point Clear is a WONDERFUL American-plan resort at Fair Hope, very close to Mobile. The food is spectacular, the staff superb, and the place quiet and well-tended. Of course, the resort Boca Raton just outside of Ft. Lauderdale is absolute tops, too.

There really are lovely places they will enjoy! A travel agent would be good help, particularly if you go with them to the office to help ask questions, etc. My travel agent here in Illinois does a wonderful job for me and never has an agenda. If she's been to a particular place she says so. If not, she says that, too. I'm sure she is not alone in that, and that there are excellent travel agents out there.

  • There are holidays available that do not use ships, but they use coaches, and that would be even worse as far as walking. Would they be interested in a river cruise in Europe. They are small canal type boats, equally as luxurious as the big ships, but not as much walking around needed on board. They can see fantastic places by coach along the rivers and canals. Also, have they travelled on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer? They even have special lifts for people in wheelchairs to get on and off. They have coaches to transfer to the hotels at night, as the train only travels during the day.

Maybe they would like a simple cabin rental in the mountains, desert, or at a scenic beach?

A small cozy house avoids the problems with negotiating a large ship. If some family members are there to socialize, cook, and assist, I should think that would mean far more to them than going any particular place.

You might look into a cabin in Gatlinburg or pigeon forge Tennessee. It is beautiful there with nature around and you can rent cabins fairly cheap. If they need a recharge there may be other places to go but this one is awesome. If you need to travel on a budget I suggest using the principals in the book "In pursuit of a deal, 5 star travel on a 2 star budget" it will help you to get the biggest bang for your buck.

Have you considered European or Asian river cruising? The ships are much smaller, 200-250 passengers and fewer decks (4). Another suggestion would be American river cruises.

Finally, train travel, for example trans-Canada trip.
