Bounds of measurements?

Two pieces of string have lengths 23 cm and 14 cm measured correct to the nearest cm.

what is the maximum possible total length of the two pieces of string?

    not really an easy question. like many things, it depends upon the definition.

    if a string 2 inches long is measured to the nearest inch, the maximum length it could be is one of two quantities:

    1. 2.49 if the convention is tl round UP at 2.5

    2. 2.50 if the convention is to round up at 2.5 if the preceeding number is odd/even

    Most of the time, folks will round up at 2.5. If that is the convention here, then one string could be as long as 23.49 and the other as long as 14.49
