When I was in school: no (My school focused on the history of the British isles from the Romans to the Second World War).

I didn't take A-Level History in college so I don't know, although college courses vary dramatically by institution.

When I was in university: yes. As part of the study of the rise and fall of global empires, which included several studies of the British empire in North America, analyzing various primary and secondary sources on the subject, and reading several books (over the entire course) that also touched on the subject.
