Classic mini heater problems?

I recently bought a 1991 mini city e and I have a problem with the heater. The first thing is that no matter weather the fan is on or off, what the temperature stick is set to and what position the switch (car, screen, off) is in cold air will blow from the air vents that point towards you, the faster you go the more cold air that comes through. And when the fan is on and set to car mode there is still no difference in this. Secondly when the fan is on and it is set to screen, hardly any air comes from the screen vents. And lastly the stick that you pull out to adjust the temperature doesn't make any difference at all, I just get cold air. I'm good at DIY but not too good with cars so please can you tell me what could be wrong and if I can easily fix it myself. Any help will be much appreciated!

    Hi Ben

this sounds like a fairly typical Classic Mini to me. yes you can get the heater water valve changed or repaired. sorry it will not make a lot of difference it is just so old fashioned type of car heater.

the comparison with a modern car is not likely.

yes it is either you that gets blasted with heat or the windscreen to blow away ice in the winter months. we have moved on in the automotive industry but not the old classic BMC mini.

the only other vehicle similar to this ancient heating system was that used in a Land Rover defender circa 1960- 1980. a poor apology for a car heater it really was.

Source(s): A t 67 years old my youth was spent freezing in a mini or land rover so by today's standard well like standing in the middle of a field to be honest. no heat and not cool when it is hot outside.

since no heat at all.. heater valve has failed . a common issue and simply needs replacing. hose through heater matrix when it is off to check flow through isn't in fact blocked in heater matrix itself.

we may ? also have a failed flap in heater unit.this is where cable or retaining arm has failed allowing flap to stay in one position ( so no air to screen ) look up where heater control valve is if need be but normally found on cylinder head area.

    Failed heater control valve,or cable.

it's on the back of the cylinder head, easy find, just follow the cable,

take the cabel off,if it isn;e already, and move the valve by hand,if you cant you need a new one.

a lambda sensor is a voltage generator, but you should be able to see the pattern on a scope or with a scanner for the cpu.
