2002 Cadillac SLS problem with coolant / overheating?

I have a 2002 seville sls. Its leaking water, if i fill up the resivoir and let it idle after about 10 minutes the water starts to boil and boils out the overflow resivoir. It doesnt seem to be circulating. I can drive it all day long on the interstate and it doesnt overheat until i hit traffic. Could it be a thermostat? or maybe the water pump? All the pullys are turning with the serpentine belt so could i take out the thermostat and see if it helps? Do i maybe have a more serious problem?

More than likely the cooling system has never been drained, flushed or CLEANED. If someone has ever mixed discount store antifreeze with the factory fill of Dexcool it has plugged the cooling system. Any GM Dealer will tell you the same thing.

check out the lower hose as they age and they get soft.[ they do not have a wire in them any more this is the demand side.] they will collapse and all most stop the flow of the coolant when you are driving. the the truck will overheat and you will have a lose of coolant from the over flow tube. this happen when you are driving an putting a demand on the truck and all most never in the shop.

ok this is what to do next when running sitting still does your coolant fans come on and run ? next if they are running then you need to check if your rad. is getting water through it you need to see how hot the rad. tanks are from one side to the other and if it getting hot at both top of the tanks is the same as the bottem do not remove the thermostat unless you change it

thermostat is cheap and easy to replace, however, turn your car on, let it warm, then turn on the heater full blast, if it doesn't blow hot air you have an air bubble in your heater core( this is actually common), "burp" the system , and you should be good to go. In case you do get hot air from heater in the car i would do the thermostat first. it is cheap and easy
