How many raw eggs can you feed a dog in a week?

8 days ago adopted a Boxer from Humane Society. Last dog I owned was 27 yrs ago; at times use to give dog raw eggs which seemed to make its coat shine.

Update:

She is 11 months old.

Once a week. I prefer using organic free run eggs or even local farmer eggs if you can get them. Feeding high quality food (Orijen, Acana, Wellness Core) and adding a wild fish oil supplement all help with keeping the skin and coat healthy/shiney. (And no, you don't need to pay the vet to buy a fish oil supplement from them. Go to your local pharmacy and pick up some 500/1000mg capsules, crack one into her food every day/every other day. It's cheaper and higher quality because they are human grade.)

Raw meat is completely safe for dogs! It takes a bit of work to start a balanced raw diet but totally worth it. My dogs are on Orijen kibble, but also get some raw meat (and raw eggs) for treats or mixed into their foods.

(Don't listen to the other poster, Hills Science Diet is a crappy food. ALWAYS do your research on the ingredients in your dog's food. Even if a food is advised by a vet, do your research, most vets don't know much about food. Here is a great ubiased website that rates food based on ingredients: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry... Ingredients don't lie. Most dog foods today are in fact terrible, not awesome. This is why dogs are getting infections, heart failure, cancer, and etc. at alarming rates - more money in the vets pocket, funny how that works.)

It's safe to feed several raw eggs a week to a dog. The reason some people have been warned off raw eggs is because raw egg white contains enzyme inhibitors. However, there's no adverse affect if the dog only gets a few eggs a week. Raw is much healthier than cooked since that destroys most of the benefits. Let the dog eat the shell, too - the calcium's good for them.

some say this is bad because the egg white inhibits some digestive functions, however the nutrients in the yoke more than make up for this, I just read this in an article about feeding raw. We have a Ridgeback and a Great Dane that we feed raw and add whole eggs to their diet regularly. We break the egg up but don't powder it. I don't think the egg shell will cut the roof of the mouth or present a choking hazard if you break it up but I would't give it to them whole, especially a puppy.

I would give a dog that size no more than 4 maybe 5 eggs a week. If you feed too many you will throw off the nutritional balance.

    None! (can you say salmonella?)

I can tell when a dog is on Science Diet food when it comes in for a vet visit, because the hair coat is always shiny and healthy!

You can use omega 3 capsules, which are available through your vet. We use 3V Caps.

Dog foods today are excellent. Hills Science is the premiere company for research on proper nutrients and dog foods. See their web site for more information.

I feed SD Healthy Advantage and find that my dog's coat is beautiful!

Seriously, though, our vets do not recommend anything raw because of the real possibility of salmonella, which dogs can get. I know years ago that's what we did, but we don't recommend it now (remember when we used to eat raw cake batter?)

    vet tech Thanks for adopting!

Oh don't give any, good way to get your dog sick, overweight and really doesn't help with coat. Your Vet can give you some advise as to which supplement is best for his age and energy level. Many are so easy to apply, just a squirt in the food once a day! Good Luck!

Raw eggs are bad for dogs just like they are for humans. They could get salmonella and/or e coli poisoning that would cause other problems. If you're gonna give your dog eggs at least boil them.

You can give him eggs once or twice a week. And raw is fine. I feed my dogs a prey model raw diet and they get eggs twice a week.
