'84 Olds Cutlass?
Hello, im seriously considering purchasing an '84 Cutty that is as clean as prbly any given 2013 vehicle today. My qstn is how reliable are those 3.8 V-6's in that era for mpg's and reliability?

actually the engine is the weak link in that car. i drove a '79 malibu until the wheels fell off (11 years), then drove an '80 for ten more. same car as cutlass, different sheet metal. mileage was fair to poor (i never got more than 16 mpg city), as far as the CCC carb on this car, you probably could come up with an earlier carb/intake combo to eliminate this crap. check the oil pressure on this car, this 3.8 buick motor was terrible for oil pump wear (which means the entire timing cover needs replaced) good luck if you buy this quasi-classic!

Poor mileage. Ok reliability. Carburetor is the big problem. That's when they were switching over to computer controlled carbs and they were horrible.
Also, I don't care how clean it is, it's still 30 years old. Get it? EVERYTHING in it is 30 years old. If you plan on driving it daily, plan on fixing something weekly.

Have to agree with stpaulguy on this one. The car may LOOK great, but everything with 30 years on it is prone to fail. They actually had pretty stout parts, but you are talking engine, trans, rear axle bearings/shafts/gears, balljoints, u-joints, ALL going to require rebuild/replacement in the near future, with daily driving.
