Why was Thomas Hood talking about flowers in the poem 'I remember, I remember'?

I remember, I remember

The roses red and white,

The violets and the lily cups--

Those flowers made of light!

The lilacs where the robin built,

And where my brother set

The laburnum on his birthday,--

The tree is living yet!

There`s the distinct allusion here, to `light`..

the capacity to see this is greater or lesser..

particularly in childhood, the essence of nature is possible for some to view.

Perhaps he is comparing the innocence of childhood using light as metaphor ,

as well as offering a brief, lovely and satisfying view of his and

    his brother`s life

and perhaps...how the tree, there in youth, might outlast him?

I`m glad to be introduced to this poem.
