If your nails were torn out, would they grow back?

I'm talking about being completely ripped out by, say, pliers or something. I'd like to know, because of this story I'm writing. I planning on having one of the characters tortured by having their nails ripped out, but I need to know whether they'd grow back eventually (for the sake of realism and continuity).

They grow back eventually, if your nail bed isn't damaged too much.

They would but it would be a very long and painful process.
