How do I fix my sink? Help! I need detailed instructions!?

How do I fix my sink? The lever that moves up and down is stuck - this is the one that allows the sink to be stopped. Can you please provide step by steps of what to do to fix this? I've also included a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNzH7lusU3w

Thanks!

That lever goes straight through the sink and counter and you can see where it comes out the bottom right behind the drain. Its then connected into the drain by a metal rod. The metal rod goes inside the drain and fits into the bottom of the stopper.

The first thing you should do is disconnect the vertical part from that metal rod. Its just connected by a little u shaped band of metal. Push on the u shaped piece of metal away from the drain and it will pop off. Remember which hole of the vertical lever the rod went through.

Now verify that the vertical lever moves freely. As long as it now moves your problem is with the metal rod piece that goes into the drain.

That assembly consists of the rod which has a plastic ball you can't see yet, the drain which has a half sphere indentation that the ball fits into, and a threaded nut piece with the other half sphere indentation. The drain and nut hold the ball in place creating a water proof ball joint.

With a pair of pliers unscrew the nut from around the rod. Be careful, since you're working backwards it will probably unscrew clockwise from your vantage point. It might be hard to unscrew and it might break. try to keep that from happening. :D

Once the nut is off you should be able to pull on the rod to remove it from the drain. After you remove the rod you can also remove the stopper. At the bottom of the stopper you'll see a little square hole, thats where the rod fits through and holds it in place.

Now that you have it all disassembled clean and inspect the parts as well as the inside of the drain that you revealed by pulling the stopper out. You might have to replace the ball/rod if the ball is gnarly. If the socket is gnarly you'll have to replace the whole drain. Clean everything out and reassemble the rod/ball, nut, and stopper. Its a bit of a chore to fit the inside end of the metal rod through the hole at the bottom of the stopper. I've never found any tricks to it, I just hold the stopper with one hand and the rod in the other hand and keep poking around until the rod finds the hole. Verify that it works by pushing the rod up and down. There shouldn't be much resistance.

As long as that all works reattach the vertical lever piece. First slip the u shaped piece of metal onto the rod, then the vertical lever, then the other side of the U shaped piece of metal.

I know it all sounds complicated.. its not. Its just hard to explain without pictures. Here's a diagram of how its all assembled to help you on your way:

  • The pipe coming down from the center of the sink is the drain. on the back side of it, about 2 inches below the sink, is a screw off cap with a round stick of metal coming through a hole in the "top" of the cap. Unscrew the cap, and pull it and the rod away from the drain. There's a flat piece of metal connected to the lever which you use to open and close the drain. The other end of that flat piece is connected to the round stick. Take these pieces apart, and clean them all. Now, reassemble the sink parts, starting with the stopper. Put the stopper into it's hole. Put the stick into the hole in the drain, being sure the end of the stick goes into the hole in the stem below the stopper. Put the cap over the stick, and lightly tighten it to the drain. Connect the flat piece to both the round stick and also the drain lever. Adjust which hole the rod goes through on the flat piece, so it both opens and closes to suit you. Tighten the cap.

Kinu, That looks the type of a pop-up that I just installed on my parents' sink at their house. With that "Pop-up" you have, THAT LEVER is not going to work! That lose part that you have simply screws into the threaded part that is in the drain of your sink. It just became lose and came off. After you simply screw that back in, you simply push down on it to close off the drain. Then, to drain the sink, you push down on it again and that opens up the drain to drain the water in your sink. That pop-up that you have is not designed to be operated with that lever on your sink. OK? :<) By the way, GREAT VID!

Underneath the sink is an adjustment with many holes. Try a different one til it opens and closes the way you want it to.
