Why is it a penalty if the offensive player loses the ball while diving towards the pilon?

    Its not a penalty. However, one of the oddities of the rules is the different results of the ball being fumbled out of bounds.

    - If a fumbled ball goes out of bounds in ahead of where it was fumbled, the team last in possession retains the ball from the spot of the fumble.

    - If a fumbled ball goes out of bounds in behind where it was fumbled, the team last in possession retains the ball from where the ball crossed the sideline.

    - If the offense fumbles into the endzone and then out of bounds (including hitting the pylon), the defense is awarded a touchback.

    - If the defense forces a fumbled ball out of bounds in the endzone a safety is awarded to the offense.
