What do you think of the name Alice spelled Alys and Alyss?
I have always loved the name Alice but spelled the old fashioned way Alys but recently I love the added S at the end.
I need to mention Alys is not a recent made up spelling, or illiterate spelling as some will say. There is evidence the name was in use as far back as the 12th Century but perhaps even further back than then. The most notable bearer I have found was Alys, Countess of the Vexin.

Also I am not naming a child this I am just asking for honest but respectful opinions. Thanks!
Actually Alys is a more classical name because it is from Medieval times. Alys is a spelling from as far back as the 12th century where as Alice is the name spelling that was most popular in the United States in the Victorian era and at the turn of the 20th century.
Plus Alys is Welsh and Old French.
Thanks for the comments.

I used to think people should all have common names but I don't think so anymore. I think with all the names in the world they should be used by who ever wants to use them. It gets pretty boring being the 9th kid in a class with the same name. When I was in school their were 4 or 5 Heather's in my class and 3 or 4 Elizabeth's. I was the only Cassidy in my classes and school when I was younger before Cassidy became a bit more popular. Also growing up I could never find my name on key chains, rulers, what have you and so I had to get my middle name. It was a bit annoying but I love now being named Cassidy.
I think parents that don't conform to the set list of names people think should be used, should be applauded. We don't want to end up in a world like in a Twilight Zone episode, all the people in the world conforming and not being able to express there personality.
Sorry for the rant but I do appreciate all the answers and opinions, I really do. :~)

The nice comment about you never finding a keychain at Disney with your name was a good one, and kind of funny. But it's true.
In our search to be unique, our name does seem to play a partial role in our personalities. A guy named Rip and a guy named Finster...picture each and what you'd expect a first meeting to entail.
We are not slaves to our names, but we are colored by them, especially in how we are viewed by our peer group.
Your spellings for Alice are pretty, and if they appeal to you, then by all means. However, I'd wonder why you received that name in the first place. Does it mean something special to your parents? Might want to ask them how they feel about a change. Chances are, most parents will support you in your choice.
My feelings personally? Well, I'm a white rabbit with a vest and a pocket watch. You can take it from there.

As a childcare worker, I am usually amused by parents who feel compelled to spell their children's names all weird like. It makes me think that the parents have issues with conformity and that this is their way of rebellion or something. I don't know if they take into account the trouble the child will have later in life, wearily explaining to others how to spell their name.

You'll never find a keychain with your name on it at Disney World, but as an adult, who knows the history, I think it's beautiful.
