I have a Blog... Character Names Galore I have just started posting. I put names on there with the Meaning, Origin, Gender and Pronunciation. I put a little on there about what I think of the names and where I think would be a good place to put them genre wise. I also intend to put writing tips I have learned over the years. I am an unpublished author at present (I have written 6 novels, 1 short story and 1 novella ) but I have learned a thing or two trying to get representaion. But mostly my blog is there to help any other writers find that right name for there character. Character naming is very important second to coming up with the plot. Come check out my blog and I hope my character names help you. http://www.namesaremygame.blogspot.com/

  • What do you think of the name Alice spelled Alys and Alyss?

I have always loved the name Alice but spelled the old fashioned way Alys but recently I love the added S at the end.

I need to mention Alys is not a recent made up spelling, or illiterate spelling as some will say. There is evidence the name was in use as far back as the 12th Century but perhaps even further back than then. The most notable bearer I have found was Alys, Countess of the Vexin.

Also I am not naming a child this I am just asking for honest but respectful opinions. Thanks!

  • What are your thoughts on the name Elixabete and what is the pronunciation?

Elixabete is the Basque form of Elizabeth. The internet says it is pronounced ee-LEESH-ah-bet-UH. I think it should be pronounced ee- LICKS-ah-bet-UH because Elixa looks like Elixir.

What are your thoughts on the name and what would you say is the proper pronunciation.

  • Would these names go well together for a trio of young sister characters...Virginiana, Artemisia, & Ravensara?

The mother is one of my main characters. Plant names are common. These are all Latin names for plants.

Virginiana Lilac (Pronunciation of Virginiana: vir-JIN-ee-AHN-ah) Nickname while young: Lila

Artemisia Lilia (Pronunciation of Artemisia: ahr-te-MEE-zhah, Ar-tay-MEE-zee-uh, AARTAHM-ZHAH Pronunciation of Lilia: LIL-ee-ah, LEE-lee-ah) Nickname while young: Lili

Ravensara Lotus (Pronunciation of Ravensara: RAY-vin-Sahr-Uh or RAY-vin-sair-uh) Nickname while young: Lot or Raven

What are your thoughts on the names? Bear in mind this is a science fiction / fantasy novel set in the future.

One of my friends had a hard time pronouncing Virginiana and I haven't told her about Artemisia & Ravensara yet. Are these names too hard to say. I am pretty set.

BQ: Are there any other five letter L flower names that might work for Ravensara middle name other than Lotus?

  • How do you pronounce the name Ravensara?

Ravensara is a genus of trees in Madagascar. It's sometimes called clove nutmeg. I thought it would make a good name for one of my characters.

    I pronounce it RAY-vin- Sahr-Uh or RAY-vin-sair-uh

    Thanks!

  • How to tell how 10 Parts Water to 10 Parts Oil to 1 Part Citronella Oil go together?

How do I determine how much is needed if a insect repellent recipe says take ten parts water to ten parts olive oil or other vegetable oil to one part citronella oil. How much do I do for whatever container I am using. It is probably simple and I am over thinking it.

  • What went wrong with my buttercream recipe and can this be frozen and reused?

I attempted to make a butter-cream frosting the other day. When I got done it was anything but a proper butter-cream. It looked like a batter, not wanting to waste it we drizzled it over our individual pieces of cake because it was so sweet. What did I do wrong? Also we have a lot left so can it be frozen?

    Chai Butter-Cream Recipe

    2 Chai teabags

    1/4 Cup Boiling Water

1 Cup Unsalted Butter or Margarine, Softened

    8 Cups Confectioners Sugar

    1/2 Cup Cold Milk

1- Prepare a very strong tea by steeping the teabags in boiling water for 10 minutes.

2- Meanwhile, cream the butter in a large bowl using an electric mixer until fluffy. Add confectioners sugar, and continue creaming until well blended.

3- Pour tea into cold milk; beat milk into frosting until incorporated. Continue beating frosting until fluffy.

  • Is there a substitute for this ingredient in a recipe?

In a recipe it says add a few drops of Almond Extract. I don't have almond extract and it seems too expensive at the store for something I won't use that much. Is there a substitute for almond extract or would it be fine to just leave it out of the recipe since it only said add a few drops.

    Thanks!

  • Is this part of my story classified as Plagiarism?

I am writing a novel and I am a little unsure if this is classified as plagiarism. In my story my character is describing how to make a citronella spray and then in another section she is describing how to make a flammable gel. I found the citronella spray and flammable gel methods on the internet but I described the method in my own words but I used the internet version as a guide. Is using it at all even in my own words still classified as plagiarism.

    Hope this makes since.

  • Why would you take Magnesia, Stimulant, and Strong Coffee after you take an emetic for this berry poisoning?

**********THIS IS FOR A NOVEL I AM WRITING*****

If an adult takes anywhere from 3-6 berries from a Deadly Nightshade plant or known by some as a Belladonna plant or Atropa Belladonna, you get deathly ill and some die.

On a site I found it said you should seek medical care but it said start taking an emetic immediately. An emetic is something that causes vomiting. It said warm vinegar or mustard and water will do it and perhaps a stomach pump would need to be done. Then it said after vomiting a person should be administered Magnesia, a stimulant and strong coffee.

What exactly is magnesia and what does it do and how is it made? What would be a stimulant? Wouldn't strong coffee be a stimulant and wouldn't strong coffee upset a stomach that had just been emptied by vomiting?

Would calabar beans be effective in a deadly nightshade berry poisoning?

  • What do you think would be the next line of this sentence?

Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Lie.

I am just curious as to what you think would come next if you read this in a book. I am planning on writing another short story with this line in it and I already have the next line but I am curious as to what comes to mind when you read this and what you think would be the next line.

BQ: If you read this line would you keep reading?

  • Why do authors put Clockwork in title, ex. Clockwork Orange, Clockwork Prince, Clockwork Princess?

I read why the author of Clockwork Orange chose his title but why do other authors (mostly Dysotopian, Urban Fantasy novel titles) choose to put Clockwork in the title, what does it mean. If it is a simple answer I will feel dumb for asking this.

    Thanks!
