should a name like john, jr. always be followed by a comma?

is it

or

and yes i understand i could forgo the comma before the jr. as well. i'd just like some feedback on the fussy format.

The "fussy format" is to place the comma before generational suffixes Jr. and Sr. Whether it belongs after generational suffixes depends on the sentence.

In your example, there should NOT be a comma after Jr. His name is Martin Luther King, Jr. "Jr." is a suffix; it is not parenthetical.

However, here's a example in which the comma should be placed after Jr.: Martin Luther King., Jr., along with his family, attended church on Sunday.
