Is libre office software compatable with Microsoft Office?

Okay so I have/had Microsoft office, it came with my computer but now about a year later it is gone, so I am guessing I forgot about agreeing to a one year package deal.

Anyway I asked for some advice last week and was told about http://libreoffice.org/ which seems like it would work, but will I be able to open my old Microsoft word and excel documents in this libre?

Also if my Microsoft Office is gone why am I still able to use programs like Microsoft Movie Maker etc...

Libre Office is indeed compatible with Microsoft Office. I use it all the time, and it will open MS Office files both the older .doc, .ppt, .xls and the newer ones that end in "x". Sometimes things will be a little off, out of alignment, etc. partially because of font rendering differences and partially because of layout differences, but the files are usable. You can then save file in LibreOffice as MS Office file types, so that they can be opened and edited by people who are using MS Office.

As for Movie Maker, that comes with Windows, but MS Office has to be purchased separately.
