Why do so many young writers write in the present tense?

I've noticed when I go to answer questions in Yahoo Answers that so many young writers write in the present tense, as if the action is happening while I'm reading it. I've read many YA books and many, many adult books and I've never seen anyone write in the present tense. Where is this coming from? Are there some other very popular books out there written this way that I have somehow overlooked?

I would say because they are young and inexperienced. It is easier to create a story in present tense rather than the complexity of a reveal or a story that makes you piece a puzzle together for a total picture. I would assume to capture the attention of a younger audience. It's a shame.

The Hunger Games does it. Maybe that's where it stems from.
