Buying a plane ticket?
Silly question I'm sure but as I've never purchased a flight ticket before. If one buys a ticket for a flight are the tickets sent to them in the post or do you have to collect them from somewhere? Just standard Uk based question. Also how long before a flight should I check in? Thanks.

At the time you put your credit card information in online, you get an email. From this email LINK, you print your own tickets at home. This will look like an itinerary, but it is actually your ticket. You need TWO. In case one gets lost/stolen. It will have something like a bunch of all caps, and that is your ticket in their computer. YDRRTQ At 24 hours before the flight, again at home, you sit before your computer, and print your boarding pass(s) using the same link. So if you have 2 legs to the trip, you must print 2 boarding passes.
When you print these boarding passes, that doubles as "checking in."
On your return, sit at your computer again and print the boarding passes you need.
Paper tickets are not done anymore. The tickets do not even look like tickets. Seems strange to pay so much money for something so little.
On the far right side, it will tell you the type of airplane that is to be used. This can be changed, but probably won't be. You can look up your seat on seatguru.com.

IT DEPENDS whether you are traveling with a budget airline or a premium airline.
Budget airlines (such as Jet2, easyJet and RyanAir) offer cheap flights over relatively short distances and flight time of no more than 5 hours. You are likely to be using this type of airline if you are traveling to a European destination....
BUDGET AIRLINE PROCEDURE - When booking your ticket online you are offered the option of check-in online or check-in at airport. If you wish to check in at the airport you are charged a fee (usually around £20-30 each-way). If you wish to check-in at home there is no additional fee and 7 days prior to your flight you will be emailed a printable boarding pass to present to staff at the check-in desk. If you forget to do this you will be charged a fee (usually equal to the fee of actually checking-in at the airport).
Premium airlines fly over longer distance, usually outside of Europe and include British Airways and Fly Emirates.
PREMIUM AIRLINES (can vary slightly, but generally) - offer you the opportunity to check in online and print out a boarding pass, check in on your mobile and store your boarding pass or check-in at the airport yourself using a specialised self-serve kiosk. In order to do this you will need your booking reference or form of identification (e.g. credit/debit card, Executive Club card or passport). Failing that you can check-in with a member of staff at the check-in gate. The important difference with a premium airline is you will not be charged a fee regardless of which option you choose and/or if you forget your printable boarding pass.
Airlines suggest that you should be at the check-in desk at least 2 hours before your flight. But in reality 1 hour is plenty of time on 99% of occasions. However, you obviously need to account for the possibility of unforeseen circumstances (such as cancelled trains, a crash on the motorway) causing a potential delay on your journey between your home and the airport.

Always read the small print, it should tell you most airlines require around 90 minutes
