What is the best sewing machine thread? - UK question?
OK, only just been bitten by the sewing bug and always thought thread was thread - now I know it's not...
I only have a basic Janome machine.
Thank you!! What brands are favoured please?

When people ask what's the best thread I always say Getturman or Mettler long staple polyester thread. Those two brands are all you need to know. I believe Gutterman thread is sold world wide, their long staple polyester thread is about the best you can buy. It's strong enough to hold up under stress and it's flexible enough to have some give in stretch fabrics. It's found here: https://www.guetermann.com/shop/en/view/content/co... . Mettler is another company that sells high quality thread -as good as Gutterman. I know they are available in the UK as the company has a UK website: http://mettlerthreads.co.uk/index.html their threads come in a variety of fibers including a high quality long staple polyester: http://mettlerthreads.co.uk/acatalog/MettlerSeralo... a shiny and strong decorative thread that can be used for construction as well as embellishment: http://mettlerthreads.co.uk/acatalog/MettlerSilkFi... and as a bonus this cotton thread is fully mercerized meaning it doesn't shrink when washed and the color won't fade even if the fabric is boiled. cool. They also have shiny threads and strong threads and more.

Use a general purpose poly thread. Do not use shiny embroidery thread to sew a seam. they are for decorative sewing only.
Maderia
Gutermann
Sulky

Cotton thread should not be used on man made fabrics as it shrinks.
Polyester thread may be used on any fabric, man made or natural which is why I, and most sewers, prefer it.
You chose thread to suit the fabric. Which machine you use makes no difference.
