Do 2 trillions make 1 sextillion?

I'm sorry if this question is stupid, but I saw in one of my online classes that the brightness of the sun is equal to "4 trillion trillion light bulbs."

The way your question is stated ("2 trillions") is not the way your detail text is usually spoken ("trillion trillion") As the first answer kind of blunders through - you have to multiply to make the words work (and the answer is different in UK vs USA) but a trillion trillion light bulbs is a sextillion. (in USA trillion = 1,000,000,000,000 )

The power of the light emitted from the sun is about 3.84x10^26 watts.

    A trillion trillion is 10^12 * 10^12 or 10^24.

So their comparison of "4 trillion trillion light bulbs" are to 100W bulbs. Since an incandescent bulb and the sun are both thermal emitters, and both have similar surface temperatures, that's a pretty good comparison.

1 Trillion is 1,000,000,000,000, or a 'one' with 12 zeros after, or in scientific notation, 10^12. Each new '...ilion' is 1,000 times the previous one. After Trillion, you have Quadrillion, then Quintillion, then Sextillion, so you took a Trillion, or 10^12 and multiplied by 1,000, 3 times, which is the same as adding 3 to the exponent 3 times, so you've added 9 to the exponent, making it 10^21...a 1 with 21 zeroes. We don't have names for numbers that large. In fact, everything past a Quadrillion is rarely called by a name, and is written in scientific notation.

The simple answer is; NO, it takes a BILLION Trillion to make 1 Sextillion.

Well above a certian number of zeros, we stop naming new orders of magnitude - so there is no official name for that number. And we only ascribe an new '...illion' to every third order of magnitude.

a trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 or 10^12th power (12 zeros - each zero is an order of manitude representing a 10 fold increase)

So a trillion of those is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (24 zeros) If we followed the pattern it would be septillion or heptillion (it's the 8th group of 3 zeros from the right, but since the first group represents thousands, then the "...illions" begin with the 2nd group of 3 zeros.

1st group of 3 zeros gets us to the thousands

2nd group gets us to the millions (10 thousand, 100 thousand, million)

    3rd - billions (10 million, 100 million, billion)

    4th - trillions

    5th - quadrillions

    6th - quintillions or pentillions

    7th - sextillions or hextillions

    8th - septillions or heptillions

    9th - octillions

    10th entillions or nontillions

    11th decatillion

A trillion trillion is a septillion.

Different light bulbs have different brightnesses.

    1,000,000,000,000 * 1,000,000,000,000 = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Whatever that's called. One Octillion I guess.
