Movie clichés --- jumping to avoid explosions?
What was the first movie that has the hero's jumping into the air or running down a hallway to avoid an explosive blast of a grenade or a block of C-4. This cliché can be see in all NCIS-LA, The Long Kiss Good Night. The blast velocity of C-4 is near 8000 m/s. TNT is about 6900 m/s.
Yes, J, it is all fiction and done for effect. Escaping bullets is somewhat believable. I have spoke with a number of USMC who survived combat and they were always thankful for not being hit. They told me keep your head done and hit what you are shooting at. Lily RT: You bring up an excellent example of the failure of physics in movies. Assume that McClain was 68kg (150lbs) and he fell for 2-3 stories to be suddenly stopped by the "reel" --- what would the forces on the body be for that acceleration, Add in the forces of his swing out to break the window and shot the guy there only to magically not get yanked out of the window by the falling reel and hose. how else would they get out of an explosion? they only have seconds to think, and it's the only logical thing i can think of (to jump or run). it makes good television to MOST people, and that's why they get the viewers. people know it's not always legit, although the explosion in 3x24 NCIS LA was an actual explosion and they had to time it perfectly so the stunt doubles wouldn't get hurt.
