What is meant by hazardous area?

I'm studying about chemical, gas, and oil tankers and I'm confused about the hazardous area of different tankers so what is meant by hazardous area.?

    Chemicals, Gases ,Paints,Oil,petrol, Gasoline(All petro - chemicals), All gas Plant ,Explosive Chemicals many more are cover up with hazardous.These are Easily catch fire ,No naked flame near by or Toxic to breath ,.Even Electrical switches & Light fittings also Explosion proof required in these areas-No smoking areas.Pl check below WIKI - Link about Hazardous area - for a Brief Idea.
