Hazardous material, or Haz-Mat comes in many forms. Vapors can be deadly. A hazardous area would be down wind from a vapor leak. Or a loading or unloading area for such materials. A pocket of nitrogen for example is colorless and odorless. If one walks into it unknowingly and takes a breath they most likely will fall. If they fall away from it they can recover rather quickly. If they fall into it and there is no one nearby to pull them to safety their life can end very quickly. That would be dangerous spaces.

I tried to answer your question according to my understanding of your phraseology. I hope that helps.
