Should I buy a new car or repair the one I've got?

I have a 2000 Saturn SW and last week I let it get too low on oil (yes, dumb of me, I know, don't need a lecture), and it "blew a rod" (I was told) and there is a hole somewhere in the engine because of it.

Would it be cheaper to get it fixed or to buy a different car?

(avg. cost of new engine and labor?)

Just an FYI-- my budget it very low-- if I get a different car it's gonna be REALLY cheap (like no more than $600), so I can't afford much any more than that for repairs of my Saturn.

Also, if I opt to NOT repair it, I've been told that the insurance company may give money toward a new car depending on if it's considered "totaled" or not, how does that work exactly?

cheaper to part the car out and buy a new one.

totaled means the repairs exceed the value of the car when its fixed and new engine will cost you $5000 and then the car will be only worth $2000 tops.....ITS TOTALED, but you don't have insurance for breakdowns, only for accidents

Maybe you could get an engine from a salvage yard, but the total cost will probably be over $600 to buy it and have it installed. Car insurance does not cover drive-train failure.

Try CAR-part.com frop GOOD USED ENGINES! A car with a BAD ENGINE is barely worth ANYTHING! I hope you learned from this! ASK your insurancce company about this thing! An engien with a HOLE in the block is NOT REPAIRABLE by ANYONE! Bet you wish you had taken better care of it, Don't you!?? SORRY PAL!

Does the car still run? If so then fix it if their even is a problem. did thd car make knocking sounds before you figured if it was low. if not then nothing is wrong with the engine at all.

Source(s): Own experience ceasing a engine long ago due to no oil.

The repair is going to cost a ton more than $600.00 dolars and as for a new car and I don't have a clue where your going to find a car for that amount.

since you are confused about a ;out try calling local junk yard get a price on the motor after you find out the cost and if a warranty see if they can install it for you if not see if you can find a mechanic too good luck
