Why Would a Liberal Say it is a Mistake to Pay the Death Gratuity to Grieving Military Families?

“What I’m going to say, no one else will say, but I’m going to say it anyway: I think it’s a big mistake to pay the death benefits to the families of members of the military who are killed in Afghanistan and whose bodies are being brought back to Dover Air Force base and were not going to get benefits because of the government shutdown,” Bill Press, Liberal talk show host said.

Update:

@sandplant16 - There are already special exceptions, the Death Gratuity wasn't the start. So he still didn't explain himself.

@sully - I feel sorry for your family that their lives are worth NOTHING to you.

@James K - Thank you for your service. I am a vet and a military widower. BTW: You can't go to jail for debts in the US, (except child support), and you can have the debt you are being threatened over canceled.

@Mittens and Athena, "a" singular.

@The Observer - SGLI wasn't mentioned, it was about the death gratuity, which enables the families of the fallen to do the necessary traveling and make funeral arrangements before the SGLI is settled.

It is very easy to pick emotional, vote-winning topics and say let's fund those.

What you get is the subjects that get the most (corporate dollar) support are the ones funded.

Note the piecemeal approach was used with the VA: its hospital care system was funded a year ahead last March, but my disability compensation was cut off. Thank you for your seventeen years' service, now starve.

Moreover, many disabled veterans (and some active duty) also use WIC or EBT (food stamps) and thus piecemeal funding does not really address the needs of vets or military.

When the FAA ran out of money earlier in the year, and control towers shut down causing a massive snarl, Congress made sure to authorise additional money (so they could get home to their town hall meetings). Wealthy congressmen with farms also made sure their farm subsidy bill got through (some congressmen collect millions off those subsidies).

The real solution is pay all the bills incurred. However, there is political advantage in not doing this. (On the other hand, if you told your creditors you would only pay some of them, you'd be in jail.)

Since at least WW II there has been a GI life insurance for all members of the military. When I went in to the army in 1958 it was $10,000. For the same purchasing power today, the amount would be far greater than $100,000 dollars.

    Edit

I just love the way that either Safari or YAHOO spell checker will randomly correct your spelling without notice. It usually changes the meaning sometime to the opposite of what you want by sometimes adding words but more often leaving out indicated letters then installing an entirely different word.

Well, first, it was Bill Press.

Let's not slander ALL liberals because of this mentally arthritic gentleman.

He has made a career out of making outlandish statements

For example, while he was working for a Los Angeles TV station as a news commentator he did back to back opinion peaces on why we should allow convicted child killers to live on the public dole, but we should NOT waste money trying to save sick children.

    So, consider the source.

I find it interesting that all conservatives are not held to account for some of the unbelievably stupid things conservative radio hosts say, yet those same conservatives think that one liberal speaks for all liberals. Bottom line? I really don't give a sh-t what Bill Press says.

who knows why he said it. You didn't put the whole quote which might have indicated why he said it. He is one person, so who really cares?

btw - there was a reason why he said this. Since you cut his quote short , you only come off looking like a troll.

It was Democrats who initiated the remedy for gratuities..

only a low-info republiklan would buy your charade...

Crazy that you think, this is working.

    The President signed the bill..

Good Question. I am more interested why it was rejected by Congress on September 30th when it was submitted before the government shut down.

because “once the government starts making special exceptions, it allows the shutdown to continue.”

as he said a few seconds later. Oh, sorry, you wanted to leave that part out.

Does the expression "Blood Money" ring a bell? I don't oppose the practice but I can see how some would see it as ghoulish.
