Can a virus cause laptop battery to drain a lot faster ?
Well I have Samsung Laptop whose battery lasts about 3 to 3:30 hours on continous web browsing with lowest brightness levels. But since last 3-4 days I have seen battery to drain a lot quicker now a fully charged laptop drains in less than 2 hours if used continuosly without break. It can't be due to battery wear as its just couple of months old laptop and moreover it used to last for more than 3 hours on incessant usage.
This problem has started to occur since I connected a pen drive. I doubt there might be a malicious virus in it which is leading to this problem. Though I have Panda Cloud Anti virus its not detecting any so far even in full scan.
So can a Virus cause laptop battery to malfunction or degrade its performance ? If yes what are ways to rectify such a problem ?

It MIGHT- when the Drive is still connected & the Laptop is actually DOING Something... But when NOT; there must be some kind of Outside Source- draining Your Computer. I'm wondering if some kind of outside "Network"- has tapped IN-to & is working THROUGH Your Computer when it's Turned On ! That WOULDN'T want to show up as a "virus"- because it NEEDs your Computer to do it's "Dirty Work " ! :(

Hi,
Personally I have never heard of such an effect by a virus.
I suppose technically it could if it makes the laptop work harder with more process running, that would lower the battery life.
You should also consider that even although the battery is new it could be faulty, was it a genuine manufacturers part or a cheaper replacement?
To test for virus's try malwarebytes from malwarebytes..org, it is free and very good.
Just download it, install then update, then run an in depth scan.

Yes A virus can drain the battery..
as we all know that virus is capable of running application discreetly without us being aware... when multiple or more applications are open it eats up on the processing speed and the ram... Now when processor is utilized it obviously uses more energy from battery to run faster...
When I play games my lappy battery lasts for hardly 30 minutes which other wise lasts for 3:30 hours... When I am working on Photoshop, some animation programs, or 3d animation software's... It hardly lasts for 1:30 mins or so...
The same applies to Viruses since the run applications in the backgroud..... Besides Panda Cloud anti-virus doesn't sound good to me... Best is you can buy Quick Heal there is no anti virus software as good as Quick heal... If you are looking for a free anti-virus software then please download Zone alarm anti-virus Zone alarm has been very reliable product and most techie guys will acknowledge it...
Installing zone alarm will certainly be a solution to your problem...
Here is the link to download Zone Alarm free version http://www.zonealarm.com/security/de/zonealarm-fre...

I have never heard of such a virus. There are a lot of variables that control laptop battery life. For instance battery charge will deplete quickly using the WiFi instead of being hooked up directly to an Ethernet cable.

Um, Yes?
" If yes what are ways to rectify such a problem ?"
Backup picture and music files and wipe the entire machine.

Any program will drain your computer, and a virus is nothing more than a running program. Fully charge your battery, unplug it, then pop into the BIOS and run the Samsung battery calibration tool

This is not in relation to your question but if you are using your laptop at home, you do not need to use your battery. Take the battery out and just plug your adapter in to run off electricity.

I would suggest closing the lid or putting the laptop to sleep while you are not using it.
You have flash player running on an application which could be using the graphics card of the computer.
Try running this to remove all the preloaded software that might be running minimized on your laptop.
