'83 Olds Regency?
Hello out there my fellow Oldsmobile'rs, just curious to know the average mpg's on an '83 Regency and is it equipped with the 3-speed tranny. If so, can I put a overdrive tranny to try and squeeze out better mileage on the highway? If i purchase it, i do plan on a major tune up with a complete flush of all fluids/filters.

Its most likely going to have the 4 speed transmission which has overdrive. The model was called the THM 200 4R. Its possible that its only got a 3 speed but that would have been a special order. Easy way to tell look at the dash if its got P R N D 2 1 its the 3 speed if its got P R N D D 2 1 its the OD.
The standard engine for that would have been the Buick 4.1 V6. Optional was the Oldsmobile 5.0 V8 or Oldsmobile 5.7 diesel. The diesel could get you mid 20's on the highway. Either of the gas engines will be in the lower 20's. If it does not have the overdrive then I would say high teens.
If its got the overdrive you are not going to be able to do much better for mileage. The biggest reason these cars did not get great mileage is they are big, heavy, and not especially aerodynamic.

IN all probability you're going to spend $1500-2500 for a used transmission with overdrive which is going to be more than the car's worth. I would advise against it just for better gas mileage. Tune up; proper inflation; and light foot are better ideas.
