How and when was Malaria eradicated in Europe?

I randomly got onto this subject and to my amazement there is almost nothing online regarding this!? I came to think of it after reading about the distribution of Malaria and seeing different maps titled "Current malaria distribution" and "Past malaria distribution".

I can see that malaria was once prevalent across South Europe, swathes of North America and also Australia for example.

Can anyone shed some light on when Malaria disappeared from these places (if it has at all)? and how this happened? Was human-activity involved or were there a few natural events i'm missing out on that would've led to it?

Thanks, all sensible answers appreciated :) Forgive me if there's something glaringly obvious i'm missing out!

The elimination of malaria in temperate countries is partly the result of habitat changes and partly the result of spraying with pesticides. In the Washington, D.C. area, for instance, the area that is today the National Mall was once a malaria-infested swamp. A creek that ran the length of the Mall was rechanneled underground and into the sewer system, the surrounding land was drained and built up and the Tidal Basin was constructed to hold some of the water. By eliminating the mosquito habitat, they greatly eliminated the malaria problem. The same thing was also done in Panama while building the Panama Canal (although I think yellow fever was the disease they were targeting there).

The invention of DDT, a toxic pesticide, allowed the Allies to spray DDT in parts of Europe during World War II to reduce typhus, which was sickening the troops, but it also reduced malaria. The World Health Organization (WHO) made elimination of malaria a priority during the 1940s and 1950s, again using DDT to kill the mosquitos that transmit the disease. That eradication effort was more successful in temperate countries than in tropical ones. DDT was banned in many countries in the 1960s once its toxic effects on wildlife were recognized. Do a search on DDT for more information.
