MTG: Can you take notes while playing an official game?

Is it legal to bring a pen and paper to take notes while playing? Or are you just limited to cards, tokens, and life counters/dice.

You can take notes during a match, yes. However, you cannot refer to any notes taken outside the match. In other words, the only notes you're allowed to use in any given match are notes made during that match.

Actually, in any of the big tournaments, it is pretty much required to bring paper to keep track of your life totals so the judge can see life total progression and such. Note taking is permitted as long as it does not disrupt the game or take too long.
