Are engineers in the same field rude to each other?

This doesn't go for every engineer but I noticed that a good deal do not respect non-engineers or careers that are deemed lower in stature. What about the treatment amongst themselves?

It's just a competition thing. It happens in science too. I am in pure math and there are a few who belittle applied math. Just *********

EDIT: I didn't know my last word was going to be censored.

There's one thing I am being taught through university right now:

Engineers, including yourself, have it tough. Everybody helps everybody out. I don't know if this applies to the workplace, but I imagine that engineers are friendly with each other.

I am an engineer (Chemical Engineer with a Masters in Nuclear Engineering). We have always been not only polite, but friendly, with all other engineers. We have also been friendly towards secretaries. I don't understand the question.
