Why do people announce the death of a family member on facebook?

I dont get it im not a very emotional person but if someone near and dear to me in my family died

I wouldnt think oh hold on a minute let me post about this on facebook so I can get likes and comments from people who probably never met the dead person

I mean whats the point if someone died and posting about it

I see it as a way of looking for attention

    I do not get either

    I always find it so stupid

    and a lack of respect for the dead person

    like you are saying ;; most people on face book do not even know the dead person

    It's just like an obituary in a newspaper. It's not looking for attention, but informing those who may know that person that they have passed away.
