What natural remedy might help my dog with the itching caused by seasonal allergies?

She's 13, a Jack/Wire mix, eats high quality dog food (Wellness dry & Natural Balance wet).

I've heard about Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with "the mother" but I'm not sure how to use it effectively. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts about how to help my little girl? I am on a limited budget. Thanks.

My yorkie has environmental/seasonal allergies which causes her skin to itch as well. I took her to the vet and was prescribed prednisone, a steroid. It worked very well and was quite cheap but I wanted a natural approach to the problem. I give her Orijen and natures variety instinct dog foods, cold pressed salmon oil on top of her food daily and give benadryl when she is itchy. Benadryl can be given at 1 mg per pound. It works VERY well for her and she rarely has an itch anymore. I rarely have to give her benadryl either. I think the salmon oil and a good diet makes a world of difference. I recommend Grizzly brand. It is for dogs and comes in a pump bottle making it easy to measure the right amount for your dogs weight.

You mix a teaspoon of the vinegar with two cups of water. Place the mixture in her water bowl.

Additionally, scratching opens the door to skin infections (bacterial or fungal) that can aggravate the itch. For the rash/itchiness caused by secondary infections, as well as many other skin issues, I recommend a powder called 'Flowers of Sulfur' (also known as 'brimstone' or 'sublime sulfur').

This substance has been used for thousands of years to cure all kinds of skin ailments including fungal and bacterial infections and if there is itching, it will stop it within a couple of days. Google it to learn more about its healing properties.

Even vets have forgotten about this wonderful and inexpensive remedy but fortunately you can still purchase it at your local pharmacy for very little money. You can also buy it online at http://www.pennherb.com/search?mv_session_id=eDEGJ...

Flowers of sulfur is safe to apply to your pet's skin but take care not to inhale sulfur powder. You can dust and rub this powder on your dog's skin OR mix it with an oil to rub on the skin.

The dusting can easily be accomplished if you use a powdered sugar duster or an empty talcum powder bottle. Separate the hair as you go around dusting to expose the skin until you have covered it.

Alternatively, mix 1 tablespoon of flower of sulfur powder with 1/4 cup of Jojoba oil and put it in a bottle. Always shake to mix well before applying to the skin as it tends to separate. You do not need to wear gloves as it is not toxic to humans either.

Apply daily until the problem clears.

You can add the Bragg ACV directly to food or water. I'd use a Tablespoon for a dog of that size.

As for the seasonal itchies - if you're positive it's environmental - call up your vet and get a dosage for Claritin or Zyrtec or another non-drowsy antihistimines APPROVED for dogs.

You can add Raw Virgin Coconut Oil to food - 1/2Tbsp to 1Tbsp. Many people will recommend fish oil - and fish oil is great. However, Coconut Oil has amazing anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal properties, etc. that make it a little more beneficial than fish oil!

allergies are best treated by keeping the dog away from the allergens. you also give the dog frequent baths to keep pollens, molds, dust, etc, off the dogs body. (for my dog human head and shoulders works well) baths every week at least. you keep the dogs bedding area CLEAN. throw a sheet over the dogs bed and wash it with hot water and bleach... this means you wash the floor where she lies with something like clorox wipes or similar.

to help with itch there are meds available at the pharmacy otc, cetrizine HCI antihistamine tabs, this comes in generic as well as brand name, check on proper dosage for your dog.

Source(s): edit....... ps CETRIZINE is generic for zyrtec....... it saves you money if you buy generic rather than the brand,. and this med is commonly prescribed by derm vets.
