When I settle down 'for the night' it means I've gone to bed and am ready for sleep. I settle down 'in the evening' with a book, the newspaper or I'm using the computer. I have no T.V.
In the days when I did have T.V. I also liked documentaries and, even these days, if a friend tells me about an interesting documentary she watched I will sometimes try to find it on 'catch up T.V.' on my computer but that happens only occasionally.

I live in Hungary and the few cable tv shows that broadcast in English are limited. The movies that are in English tend to start after 8pm and I hate waiting that long to watch them. Most are very old films.
They broadcast allot of US tv shows but they have overdubbed them into Hungarian. I wish they had left them alone and only put HU subtitles on them.
basically I don't watch the cable tv at all. Only BBC and CNN news and not very often at that.
I have Netflix, my evening lifeline!!
I get in moods to watch only movies then I tend to watch series. Went thru Braking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Desperate Housewives, Ripper ST. from the BBC, Call the Midwife, right now I am watching mid season 1 of Arrow.
Just watch whatever looks half way interesting on Netfix, some nights it is all stand up comedy and sometimes documentaries.
Just glad to have anything in English playing.

When I'm alone I like some of the competitive shows on the cooking channel. I like some of the shows on animal planet. I like the history channel and documentaries. I watch AMC with hubby, Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels. I don't care for reality TV or talk shows. I'll tune in to the weather channel for tropical disturbances because I live in the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes I'll watch a new release movie on DVD. I was a Dexter fan, but now that it's over I dropped that channel.

There is really very little programing that I enjoy. The Seth MacFarlane cartoons are usually good. Duchovney's "Californication" is priceless. "Boss" is great drama, as is "Newsroom". Bill Maher has worthwhile programs. Enjoyed "Deadwood", "Dexter", and "West Wing". It's sometimes rewarding to search the public information channels. ALL the PBS programing has gone bad. Sometimes entertaining programs, are "Sherlock", "Mentalist", and "Criminal Minds". The CSI programs used to be entertaining, but they are repetitious, no longer realistic, or interesting, at all. Same with the "Law and Order" programs. Past their prime by several years.
I usually put on a CD with Ludwig's, or Amadeus's work, and enjoy! Helluva lot more satisfying.

Oldies! I got a nice surprise when I accidently pushed an extra 1 on my remote. I have basic Comcast cable up to channel 20. But here was channel 111. So I went through all the channels and found a total of 5 that were broadcasting FREE from nearby Sacramento. They are all old tv programs and movies!!
Here they are in case you are able in your area:
TVGN....Antenna TV....ME TV....THIS TV..INSP
Google those for your channel in your area.
I like Leave it to Beaver, Hazel, Mash, Twilight zone...too many.
PS I see some are also available on direct tv and dish...maybe more.

There is very little to tempt me to watch TV in the evenings
these days, lots of 30 minute so called comedy shows,
soaps and similar dross. Here in the UK the shows tend to
be pablum and cater for the masses, but no one asks the
masses what they want.
For that reason I tend to watch box set DVDs.
