The majority of the citizens of Salem were caught up in the ridiculous frenzy of the trials. They were afraid of the Church and the leaders of the town. Typical in that time period. As a Christian I must say these women and girls did nothing wrong. It was a shame and a disgrace for the town of Salem

If you look into the details of the trials, a certain trend emerges. This trend can explain who reacted to what and why.
Most of the "accussers", which include the young girls and many others, were all members of Samuel Parris' Salem Village Congregation (A new, more conservative church than that of Salem Town, next door).
The "accussed" were almost all "non-members" of Parris' church.
It was customary for the village to pay taxes that would become part of the village minister's salary. Since half the town did not like Parris' new conservative church or his hefty salary demands, they refused to pay the taxes.
Parris' began to preach to his congregation that the devil was trying to stop his church from succeeding and was influencing village members to turn on him. (agents of the devil = witches)
When you add a scary new world, French/Indian raids, recent killer epidemics, religious extremism, and lack of education/proper scientific understanding all into the mix....you get HYSTERIA.
You can speculate that those who were not members of Parris' church, were more likely to believe that the accusations were false. Those that were members, were probably more likely to believe the accusations as true.

Varied. There were those that thought the girls were lying and should be punished (these people were often later accused themselves), those that strongly supported the accusations, and those that ignored the whole thing.
