how do I house train my older dog?
Yes I am doing all the right things but the dog I am fostering has been used for breeding in her past life and has probably only used the small area she was kept in before. Now she has a cat flap to get in and out like the two others and she enjoys long walks. I take her out often to the garden. She has peed 3 times now in one of the three feed bowls (I have 3 dogs all bitches and all spayed) so I know she cleverly solved the problem of wetting her puppies in her previous life. Most often though she pees or poos on the carpet especially if it is raining. Any ideas? I praise her every time she does it outside and say pee pee. I really want to sort this out as I don't want to hand her back but want to keep her desperately but looking ahead to 10 years of so of 'mistakes' would drive me mad.
Thank you Tee. Yes I think next move is to try treats if I can keep the other two from getting in the way. That might give an incentive to go out when it's raining. What about clicker training? I don't punish just make a noise and say no on the occasions I catch her doing it on the carpet. I don't want to crate her. She lasts all night long and sleeps at the side of my bed and never pees in the bedroom. Thanks for your help I am anxious to make it work as I have had her for 6 weeks already :(

How long has she been with you? It will take time for her to unlearn previous behaviors. What I would do is start out as if she were just a puppy. Place some high value treats (mine are cheese and boiled chicken) in your pocket and take her out every 2 hours on the hour. When she goes, just gush over her and give the treat. Her brain will remember if she is rewarded generously. Be careful not to lose patience. It is always best to reward the good behaviors and gently correct the bad. Especially with puppy mill survivors. (I have one at home too). Feel free to email me if you want.
add: I have never used clicker training. Do not take other dogs with you when you are training her to eliminate ourdoors. Focus on her. Take them all out together after she has gone. But if she goes when the whole pack is out, reward her the same. Gushing and treats! Good luck. I wish you much success!!!
for Ronaldo::: This IS a rescue...this amazing human is FOSTERING. I got no hint of pressuring her.

If you had any second thoughts then no way should you have given this poor dog a home, she's bewildered by the changes and if you can't accept that then hand her over to a rescue shelter. This poor dog has only ever known whelping and pups and there you are 'you don't want to crate her' as if by some miracle imprisoning this poor dog will get her clean.
Forget the treats remember the praise and the walks until she obliges, 3 or 4 times a day is good we all have to do this.
If you are anxious to make it work then ensure she has no urine infection because she could well have one, as for going all night without a wee these are animals not human beings. Let her be herself she's almost there after 6 weeks so ease up on this dog she's had enough pressure all her life, she can't tell you how she suffered can she?
I never agree with a person who has the power to hand a dog back to what sort of life, take a dog on for life or don't bother.

The woman who owned the dog escaped a prison sentence, her huge dogs were crated and never exercised, so I will use this case every time crating dogs is mentioned.
