What exactly is a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)?

I was trying to enable bitlocker disk encryption on my computer and encountered this error. I know that there is a way to enable to encrypted anyway. However, I am still curious to know what TPM is.

It's a device (chip or dedicated hardware module) "hard wired" to the motherboard that verifies the software is digitally signed before running.
