It seems as though all of life's socialization comes down to a petty stupid ritual revolving around pleasing other people in order to foster pointless, selfish relationships.

Yes, I do agree with the quote.
We "act" one way around our grandparents... other way around people in positions of power (mayor, Senator, etc)... another way around our parents... another way around our friends... etcetera.
Everywhere we go is another stage upon which we portray ourselves.
And, yes, your characterization of life is pretty accurate, but it's also bleak. It's how we socialize and get pleasure from relationships ourselves. It's how we fall in love and how we stay in love.
