I have Avast free antiviruson my 'puter. Now Windows update wont work.?

How do I turn off avast temporarily so's that I can download the updates that I need?

Remember, I'm a bit of a Luddite, so type slowly.

    Right click on the Avast symbol on the bottom right of your screen, then go to "avast shields control" then select "disable permanently". Or another time of your choice.

    Avast anti-virus ate my windows defender on my old computer.
