I got kind of a couple dumb questions- answer please?

I took off the cassette of my wheels and lost it and can't remember if it was a ten or eleven speed. It was an ultegra shimano. So now I have to buy a new cassette, my question is does it matter if I buy a 10 or 11 speed besides which I prefer or do I have to buy a certain cassette that matches the deraileurs?

So if I were to buy a a shimano cassette I have to make sure the wheels are compatible with shimano? But what about the 10 or 11 speed, does that matter?

2nd dumb question-can I put a Campy cassette on wheels that were bought for a cannondale with Ultegra components?

I find hard to believe that anybody will not know how many speeds his bike has unless he just stole it or something.

The number of gears doesn't have to match the derailleur, it has to match the shifter. I think that the same hub body will fit both 10 and 11 speeds but it will have to be a Shimano. You could go with Ultegra or if you want something better, DuraAce. If you buy an 11, and it doesn't fit, you can take off one sprocket. That will work assuming that the spacers between gears are the same as the indexing on the shifters.

The next thing you should be thinking about is what number of teeth do you need for each sprocket.

You have to buy a cassette that matches your shifters so it does matter very nuch if you buy a 10 or 11 speed cassette. An 11 speed cassette is wider than a 10 speed cassette and will not fit on most Shimano compatible wheels made more than 2 years ago. The exception to this are Mavic wheels which have a wider cassette body and work with 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed Shimano cassettes. Campagnolo cassettes have a different spline pattern and will not fit on ANY Shimano cassette body. However Sram cassettes work on Shimano cassette bodies

    count gears on the shifter

remember a 10 speed will only have 9 clicks

you have to pull on the cable while you do it or it won;t shift

    or may get jammed

2nd dumb question-can I put a Campy cassette on wheels that were bought for a cannondale with Ultegra components?

    no

    EDIT

    go to a bike shop

you will never figure out all the issues

you have not even asked half the right questions

the ones you asked are wrong or irrelevant

    wle
