It's worth a lot,but where's the money?

Antiques Roadshow. Some people front up with an item which is valued by the expert, and discover it's worth a great deal of money.

Most reply that it won't be sold, but stay in the family.

What's the point I ask?

Sentimentality is all very well, but the item is valuless unless it is sold.

It certainly is not valueless unless sold. It has the same value whether sold or not.

It could be an estimate for insurance purposes.

It could increase in value and be an asset for kids and grandkids.

Most people who won't ever sell will ask for the insurance value as well. That way they can insure the item in case of fire, theft, etc.
